Comments from Participants 2013

“I am not by nature a joiner but I felt that I needed a change in my life. When I read about the exercise classes that Lifetime Learning was offering I decided to give it a try. I have been going now for several years and have enjoyed it very much. I feel that with the OSETOFIT program I get a full body work out, head to toe, muscles and joints, carefully geared to seniors. And it’s lots of fun. I have met some really nice people through the exercise classes and I am enjoying the social side of things, and I think that is very important as well. The whole experience, both physical and social gives a person a sense of well being.”

“I was on prednisone for a year for arthritis, which Dr’s say I would not be able to walk. The medication was difficult to take. Since exercising I have been this drug and I am fit and fine.”

I have attended fitness classes since 1998. I look forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays to take part in the exercises that not only keep the old body fit and strong but very importantly keep my balance in good working order to prevent falls, resulting in broken bones. After exercise time there’s always our get-togethers over a cup of coffee with my peer group where we catch up with each others news and learn what’s now affecting seniors. I hate to miss but sometimes I have to because of illness or weather conditions in winter making for poor driving conditions.”

“I felt invigorated after my class. All the muscles have been used so I can easily walk without getting out of breath. I look forward to each class. They remind me to keep exercising, and they are a fun way to meet other people.”

Write Up from Cindy Crane November 14, 2013

This invigorating program led by the energetic Alvina at the Lifetime Learning Centre Society is a must-do activity for any senior who wants to challenge their current fitness level. The program follows the Osteofit program, which is a unique fall prevention program developed by BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre. It targets people in the 65-85 age bracket. Even before the program begins, there is an air of expectancy and fun as the women gather around and plan where they will go for lunch afterwards. Shirley told me she is part of the group of eight who form the “Original 8”, vibrant women who have been taking this program with the Centre for the past fourteen years!

At the beginning of the class, Alvina shared an educational topic about some sources of Calcium in our diets. This is known as the Osteofit Tip portion of the class.

Then the fun began. Some of the activities included having the group walk forward, then dodge invisible skateboarders! This was almost as fun as the ‘throw a ball at your partner at the same time she throws one back at you’ exercise. Both these exercises are specifically designed to create agility and awareness of hazards. We also used weights and stretch bands with the practical goal of being better able to lift and carry a jug of milk or detergent. We also walked tightropes, which fortunately for me were in reality the lines on the gym floor, as an exercise in developing and maintaining good balance.

The looks of joy on the women’s faces when they were doing the ball exercise added an extra element to the exercise-that of internal joy, which is also a source of strength. Sometimes their faces bore expressions of great concentration, attesting to the fact that the program also helps develop concentration.

It has been years since I danced to the Beatles, so it was great fun to be in a gym full of women boogying to the some old favourites. At the end, the stretches were done while sitting on chairs. This is an interesting adaptation. Instead of mats on the floor, everyone was easily able to stretch without the difficulty of lying down (and getting back up again) on the floor.

At the end of the hour session, I was feeling greatly invigorated. I would highly recommend this program to men and women alike who have a desire to be led by this competent, caring instructor into an adventure in becoming healthy individuals contributing to a healthy community.
